ISLAMABAD:

A day after the government jacked up petroleum product prices, political parties rejected outright the hike and called for an immediate rollback while announcing plans to launch protests against the move.

In a fiery statement, a PTI spokesperson on Tuesday slammed the federal government as incompetent, unqualified, and ruthless mandate thieves,” accusing it of being the most anti-people government in the country’s history.

“A government devoid of the public’s vote is taking every possible step to make the lives of the people increasingly difficult,” the spokesperson said.

The spokesperson said the soaring fuel and electricity prices had resulted in a dire situation for the masses, especially as the inflation has already heavily burdened the public and crippled the economy.

“Instead of improving the tax system and increasing people’s income and purchasing power, the government has turned oil and electricity into key tools for state extortion,” the PTI spokesperson criticised.

JI announces sit-in

In parallel, Jamaat-e-Islami has also rejected the government’s decision to increase petroleum prices, labelling it as an injustice to the public.

“This increase is an atrocity against the people and will not be tolerated,” Jamaat-e-Islami spokesperson Qaisar Sharif said.

JI announced a sit-in in Islamabad on July 26, led by the party’s emir, Hafiz Naeemur Rehman.

“We are launching the ‘Haq Do Awaam Ko’ (Give Rights to the People) movement against anti-people measures. We will take to the streets and approach the courts to fight for public rights,” he stated, adding that the sit-in will continue until their demands are met.

The protest in the federal capital will see participation from various segments of society.

Hafiz Naeemur Rehman will visit provincial headquarters and major cities for public mobilization post-Ashura, meeting notable figures from various fields.
