Florida man hides in Walgreens bathroom for hours, steals food overnight

A Florida man was arrested for stealing food and drinks from a Walgreens after camping in the bathroom for five hours.

A Florida man was arrested early Monday morning for stealing various food and drink items from a Walgreens in New Smyrna Beach.

According to the New Smyrna Beach Police Department (NSBPD), officers responded to a business alarm at the store on State Road 44 around 3 a.m. The alarm company informed police that a man was inside the store, which had been closed since 10 p.m.

Security footage revealed that Christopher Morgan entered the store's bathroom at 9:40 p.m. and remained there until 2:42 a.m. After spending nearly five hours in the bathroom, Morgan indulged in various store items, including Tostitos spinach dip, chips, Reese's and Ghirardelli chocolate, Dr. Pepper, and a pack of Newport cigarettes.

When officers arrived, they observed Morgan through the store's doors, taking cigarettes from behind the counter. Body camera footage captured the security alarms going off as officers assisted Morgan in unlocking the doors from inside.

Once outside, officers began to arrest Morgan. When asked if anyone else was inside the building, Morgan, visibly confused, responded, "I came in here to use the bathroom."

Christopher Morgan resisted being placed in the patrol car and spit on an officer. He was arrested for burglary of an unoccupied structure, larceny — petit theft, resisting an officer without violence, and battery on a law enforcement officer. According to NSBPD, Morgan has more than two prior convictions for larceny — petit theft.
