KARACHI:

A labourer, tired of seeing his two daughters suffering starvation, committed suicide.

Hizbullah, a resident of Manghopir slum area, shot himself in the head due to economic hardship. On receiving the information, police reached the spot and took the injured person to hospital for medical assistance but he died on the way due to excessive bleeding. According to the Karachi Police spokesperson, the deceased person was identified as 28-year-old Hizbullah, son of Mashal Khan.

Speaking to The Express Tribune, Mashal Khan said that Hizbullah used to drive a hired rickshaw. He is originally from Waziristan and came to Karachi with his children in 2006. At times Hizbullah would not get the rickshaw so he would work as a daily wage labourer. Owing to erratic livelihood, there was usually starvation in the house. He said that Hizbullah was very worried for the last few days as there was neither money nor grain at home. Hizbullah went silent and pensive. The family woke up to the sound of a gunshot at around 2:30am and rushed out of the room. "To our horror, Hizbullah was lying in the yard covered in blood," Mashal said adding, "Hizbullah had shot himself."

The deceased's father appealed to the rulers to think about the poor workers and labourers. People are distressed due to high inflation, "what happened to my son, should not happen to anyone else."
