Prince William has expressed how "so proud" he is of the England team following their unexpected loss to Spain's national team tonight.

The Prince, 42, attended the crucial final match with his son, just hours after Kate, the Princess of Wales, was seen at Wimbledon's men's singles match with their nine-year-old daughter, Princess Charlotte.

They were both captured singing the national anthem and celebrating the UK's single goal against Spain during the intense game, and in one photo, dramatically holding their heads in their hands.

Shortly after Gareth Southgate's team conceded their final goal to Spain, the future king released his first statement on the match, acknowledging it "wasn't meant to be" but encouraging the team to look "onwards."

He posted on Twitter: "This time it just wasn’t meant to be. We’re all still so proud of you. Onwards @England. W"

King Charles III also extended his well wishes, advising the England team to “hold your heads high” after their defeat. He conveyed in a message to Gareth Southgate and his players that reaching the final was a “really great achievement in itself, and one that brings with it the pride of a nation which will continue to roar for the Three Lions”.
