ISLAMABAD:

PTI activist Sanam Javed was rearrested on Sunday from court premises soon after her acquittal in a case registered against her by the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) for allegedly posting inciting remarks on May 9, 2023, urging people to attack Lahore’s Jinnah House.

The Lahore High Court (LHC) last week cleared the PTI activist of charges in a case linked to the May 9 riots, while allowing her plea against physical remand granted by an anti-terrorism court.

However, the FIA team booked and arrested her in a new case related to the May 9 events upon her release from prison on Saturday.

Following her arrest, the FIA team transported Sanam to Islamabad, where she was presented in a district and sessions court for acquisition of custody.

The magistrate on duty, Malik Imran, acquitted her upon her request, only for her to be rearrested by the Islamabad police. Her arrest was confirmed by her lawyer in a post on X.

However, it is not yet known in which case Javed has been rearrested.

There were 12 cases registered against her, including the Zaman Park vandalism, the PML-N house fire, and a Racecourse Police Station incident. She has been acquitted in a total of four cases, including the latest FIA case, and has acquired bail in the remaining eight cases.

During a recent appearance at an ATC in Lahore, Sanam had said that false cases no longer troubled her.

She had claimed that the charges against her and the party’s founder were politically motivated and meant to suppress their voices.

“Such actions will only further expose the baseless nature of the allegations. It is only a matter of time before we all will be released,” she added.
