Wiz Khalifa Charged with Illegal Drug Possession After Romanian Festival
Wiz Khalifa, the renowned rapper and actor whose real name is Cameron Thomaz, faces legal trouble following his appearance at the "Beach, Please!" festival in Costinesti, Romania.
The 36-year-old artist was arrested and charged with illegal drug possession after local authorities allegedly discovered cannabis in his possession early on Sunday, July 14.
According to reports from the French news agency Agence France Presse (AFP), Romanian prosecutors have labeled cannabis as a "risk drug" under local law. If convicted, Khalifa could potentially face up to 10 years in prison.
The Directorate for Investigating Organized Crime and Terrorism (DIICOT) released a statement to AFP, indicating that Khalifa not only possessed more than 18 grams of cannabis but also smoked the substance onstage during his festival performance.
"During a performance at a music festival held in the resort of Costinesti, the accused was found to have possessed more than 18 grams of cannabis and to have consumed (onstage) another quantity in the form of a handmade cigarette," DIICOT stated.
Following his arrest, Khalifa was reportedly taken in for questioning along with several others but was subsequently released. Shortly after his release, he took to X (formerly Twitter) to address the incident.
"Last night's show was amazing. I didn’t mean any disrespect to the country of Romania by lighting up on stage," Khalifa tweeted. "They were very respectful and let me go. I’ll be back soon. But without a big ass joint next time."
Khalifa, known for his open discussion of cannabis use both in his music and personal life, has not shied away from integrating the topic into his public persona. Earlier this year, he humorously discussed attending his son's school events while under the influence on the Call Her Daddy podcast.
The investigation into Khalifa's case remains ongoing as Romanian authorities continue to review the circumstances surrounding the incident.
