Richard Simmons dies: The end of an era for fitness icon

Pioneering fitness guru found unresponsive in Los Angeles home

LOS ANGELES:

Renowned fitness guru Richard Simmons, aged 76, has passed away, according to multiple media outlets, including ABC News and TMZ. His housekeeper discovered him unresponsive on Saturday morning, leading to an immediate response from the Los Angeles police, who are reportedly treating it as a natural death.

Born Milton Teagle "Richard" Simmons, the charismatic fitness instructor became a cultural icon, known for his flamboyant personality and dedication to making gyms welcoming for everyone, regardless of their fitness level. His vibrant approach to exercise and well-being left a lasting impact on the fitness industry.

Earlier this year, Simmons disclosed via social media that he had been diagnosed with skin cancer. In a March post on X, he candidly shared, "I have some news to tell you. Please don’t be sad. I am ...dying. Oh, I can see your faces now." The statement, intended to be inspirational, caused a significant media reaction, for which he later apologised through his representative.

Growing up in the French Quarter of New Orleans, Simmons faced his own weight challenges, weighing 268 pounds (121.56 kg) upon graduating high school. His journey to health and fitness inspired millions as he made California his home and continued to advocate for inclusive and supportive fitness environments.
