Integration of GPs with health system urged

LAHORE:

The Punjab Healthcare Commission has proposed the integration of the general practitioners (GP) clinics with a two-way referral linkage to improve patient care and optimise resource allocation in the healthcare system.

Addressing a consultative meeting with representatives of the Pakistan Academy of Family Physicians (PAFP), PHC Chief Executive Officer Dr Muhammad Saqib Aziz highlighted the gaps in the referral of patients from the GPs for specialised care.

He shared the highlights of the proposal for integration of services, saying that it would serve as a win-win situation for both the receivers and providers of healthcare.

During the meeting aimed at seeking consensus, challenges faced by the healthcare system, including overcrowding and long waiting times were highlighted with particular emphasis on the potential of GPs in managing primary care.

As per the proposal, all patients would have a designated GP as their first point of contact.
