Karachi mayor announces plans to redirect heavy traffic to Lyari Expressway

Karachi Mayor Barrister Murtaza Wahab announced plans to divert heavy traffic to the Lyari Expressway to alleviate the pressure on Karachi's main roads.

During a meeting with senior officials from the National Highway Authority, Karachi Port Trust, and Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) on Friday, Wahab emphasised the need for efficient use of existing infrastructure to manage the city's increasing traffic.

Wahab noted that Karachi's roads are unable to withstand the continuous pressure from heavy traffic. He stated that, pending a positive third-party report, heavy traffic would be redirected to the Lyari Expressway, which is expected to improve overall traffic flow in the city.

The meeting, held at the KMC headquarters, reviewed various aspects of using the Lyari Expressway more effectively. Wahab highlighted the urgent need to organise traffic on Karachi’s major roads due to increasing congestion.

He pointed out that the Lyari Expressway's opening to heavy traffic would reduce the burden on other key roads and enhance traffic movement. The mayor also noted that heavy traffic passing through various parts of the city severely affects areas from Mauripur to Landhi.

This leads to traffic jams on roads such as Mauripur Road, M.T. Khan Road, Sunset Boulevard, Korangi Road, and Jam Sadiq Bridge. The resulting delays not only waste valuable time but also have adverse environmental impacts.

Wahab concluded by stressing the importance of resolving these traffic issues promptly, with a third-party report on the feasibility of using the Lyari Expressway for heavy traffic expected by Thursday.
