Rawalpindi bolsters Muharram security

The Rawalpindi district administration has enforced an immediate ban under Section 144 on storing building materials and parking cars, motorcycles, and push carts along the routes of Muharram mourning processions in Rawalpindi. Deputy Commissioner (DC) Hassan Waqar Cheema said the decision aims to ensure the smooth conduct of processions, particularly as the 7th of Muharram approaches.

The DC has also mandated the removal of all broken encroachments along the procession routes.

To prepare for the processions, the DC has instructed the Rawalpindi Municipal Corporation and the Rawalpindi Waste Management Company (RWMC) to thoroughly clean the routes and the roads leading to the Imambargahs.

This includes clearing drains, removing garbage piles, and relocating garbage trolleys. Additionally, the Rawalpindi Municipal Corporation has begun replacing damaged street lights along all 21 major and minor procession routes to ensure they are functional on the day of the procession.

In anticipation of power-related issues, WAPDA teams will accompany the processions with high-light transformers and necessary machinery to address any power outages, load shedding, or breakdowns. Emergency lights will be activated if any power issues arise.

The DC has directed that all channels along the routes be cleaned within two days, and encroachments must be removed within the same timeframe.

Under-construction buildings along the routes will be sealed on the day of the procession to prevent any disruptions. Furthermore, carts selling food items, vegetables, fruits, beverages, and essential items are prohibited from entering the procession routes to avoid any potential hindrance to the processions.

These measures are part of the plan to ensure the safety and smooth conduct of the mourning processions, reflecting the administration’s commitment to maintaining order and facilitating religious observances during Muharram.
