X-Men '97 seasons 2 and 3 in development: here’s everything to expect

Brad Winderbaum, the executive producer of X-Men '97, hinted that Marvel Studios has plans for a second season of the show.

Previously, Winderbaum shared that Season 3 is already in the works, stating that, similar to how X-Men: The Animated Series heavily drew from Chris Claremont's work, the current production team is continuing that tradition.

In a recent interview with The Official Marvel Podcast (via ComicBookMovie.com), Winderbaum was asked if there was anything viewers should watch out for after finishing the first season.

He responded, "We've got big plans for the second season. I've already seen all the animatics and we're well on our way to creating something that hits the heights of the first season. I know the first season is an emotional ride; that ride continues in a very X-Men fashion in the second season."

In connection with this, Rogue actor Lenore Zann hinted at Rogue's storyline in Season 2, mentioning that there are Easter eggs for "fans to follow up." She added, "In Season 2, I have already recorded Season 2, and I love Rogue's journey. She is continuing on her journey, and she wants justice for Remy [LeBeau/Gambit], and she won't let anything or anybody stop her."

Focusing on X-Men '97, Winderbaum shared Marvel President and CCO Kevin Feige's two conditions for bringing the series to life. He recalled, "Following the success of What If…?, when we were able to make more animated shows, [X-Men '97] was my first idea out of the box. And Kevin [Feige] was like, 'Alright, if we can get the [original] cast and we can get the song, let's do it.' And fortunately, we were able to do that."

Earlier, series consultant Eric Lewald discussed Marvel securing the rights to the X-Men: The Animated Series theme song, noting in 2022 that the song "wasn't a done deal necessarily" when Marvel was developing X-Men '97.

Additionally, X-Men: The Animated Series director Larry Houston praised X-Men '97's use of cameos, stating it was enjoyable to see "[his] unauthorized use of cameos fully embraced by the highly-talented X-Men '97 team, albeit now with full official clearances."

Production head and director Jake Castorena hinted at more Marvel cameos in future episodes, noting, "On our end, it was mostly nothing but encouragement [from Marvel Studios]. Cameos [are] in the DNA of the show. That's been ingrained from day one, that goes down to what the OG show did, right?"

Currently, plot details for Seasons 2 and 3 remain undisclosed, however, the new seasons of X-Men '97 will be available for streaming on Disney+.
