Jon Bon Jovi, 62, is grieving the loss of his mother, Carol A. Bongiovi, who passed away on Tuesday, July 9, at Monmouth Medical Center in Long Branch, N.J., PEOPLE confirmed.

She was known for her indomitable spirit and entrepreneurial ventures, including founding her son's fan club. Originally from Erie, Penn., Carol served in the U.S. Marine Corps and met her husband, John Bongiovi, Sr., during her service. The couple settled in Sayreville, N.J., before moving to Holmdel, N.J., where Carol lived until her passing.

In a statement to PEOPLE, Jon Bon Jovi remembered his mother as "a force to be reckoned with," whose attitude shaped their family deeply. He credited both of his parents with instilling in him the belief that any dream could become reality.

Reflecting on their support, he recalled how they encouraged his musical pursuits even during his teenage years, allowing him to perform late-night gigs while still attending school.

Carol Bongiovi is survived by her husband of 63 years, John Bongiovi, Sr., their three sons and daughters-in-law: Dorothea and Jon Bon Jovi, Anthony and Nina Yang Bongiovi, and Matthew and Desiree Bongiovi, along with her eight grandchildren.

The family has opted for private funeral services, managed by Holmdel Funeral Home.
