Emily Henry to adapt 'Funny Story' into feature film with Lyrical Media and Ryder Picture Company

Emily Henry to adapt her bestselling novel 'Funny Story' into a feature film, partnering with media companies.

Emily Henry's bestselling novel "Funny Story" is set to be adapted into a feature film, with the author herself taking on the role of adapting her work for the screen. Produced by Lyrical Media and Ryder Picture Company, the film will closely follow the plot of Henry's rom-com novel, which explores the dynamics between Daphne, a children’s librarian reeling from a broken engagement, and Miles, the ex-boyfriend of her ex-fiancé's childhood friend, Petra, as reported by Variety.

Described as a "shimmering, joyful tale," the story follows Daphne and Miles as they navigate their own romantic entanglements and form an unexpected friendship. Alexander Black and Natalie Sellers from Lyrical Media, alongside Aaron Ryder and Andrew Swett from Ryder Picture Company, are set to produce the adaptation. Jon Rosenberg and Emily Henry will serve as executive producers, with Emma Rappold as co-producer. Currently, a director for the project has not been attached, according to variety

"Funny Story" debuted strongly on the New York Times and USA Today Bestsellers lists, achieving significant sales success since its release in April. Emily Henry's literary success extends beyond "Funny Story," with her previous novels "People We Meet on Vacation," "Book Lovers," and "Beach Read" also slated for film adaptations. Additionally, her novel "Happy Place" is in development as a TV series for Netflix, with Jennifer Lopez onboard as a producer.

Lyrical Media and Ryder Picture Company recently solidified a first-look deal following their collaborative projects, including the upcoming films "Onslaught" and "The Death of Robin Hood." Their joint production "Bruiser," a coming-of-age drama, premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival and debuted on Hulu in early 2023.
