Stephen King has joined the chorus of voices urging President Joe Biden to step down as the Democratic nominee for the 2024 presidential election.

The acclaimed author took to X, formerly known as Twitter, to share his perspective with his followers.

“Joe Biden has been a fine president, but it’s time for him — in the interests of the America he so clearly loves — to announce he will not run for re-election,” King tweeted.

Elon Musk, the CEO of Tesla and SpaceX, quickly responded to King's post, stirring further debate. “Even Stephen King is voting for Trump!” Musk replied, sparking a flurry of reactions on social media.

The calls for Biden to step down have gained momentum following his lacklustre performance at the first presidential debate against Donald Trump. Biden's subsequent interview with ABC News' George Stephanopoulos did little to quell the growing dissent within the Democratic Party.

Netflix co-founder Reed Hastings also weighed in, urging Biden to step aside for the good of the party. “Biden needs to step aside to allow a vigorous Democratic leader to beat Trump and keep us safe and prosperous,” Hastings said in an email to The New York Times.

The debate has left Democrats divided, with many prominent voices expressing concern over Biden's ability to secure another term. "The View" co-host Sara Haines added her voice to the mix, saying, “If we want to defeat Donald Trump in November then I absolutely think that… they’ve got to act fast, and I would implore those closest with the President to have the very hard conversations they’re going to need to have and not just for political ramifications, but for humanity, his integrity and his legacy. That’s all on the line right now.”

In his interview with ABC News, Biden pushed back against his critics, asserting he has no plans to withdraw from the race.
