M. Night Shyamalan describes ‘Trap’ as fusion of Taylor Swift concert and ‘Silence of the Lambs’
M. Night Shyamalan has likened his new film, 'Trap,' to "a cross between a Taylor Swift concert and 'The Silence of the Lambs,'" offering a unique combination of music and suspense.
In a recent interview with Empire, Shyamalan, 53, disclosed his innovative concept for the film. The thriller, set to release on Friday, August 2, stars Josh Hartnett as Cooper, a father attending a concert with his daughter Riley (Ariel Donoghue).
The concert is by Lady Raven, a pop star played by Shyamalan’s daughter, Saleka Shyamalan. Unexpectedly, the event is a sting operation to capture a serial killer known as “The Butcher,” with Hartnett’s character caught in the chaos.
The idea for 'Trap' was partly inspired by the real-life 1985 Operation Flagship, where law enforcement lured fugitives to a fake event by offering free NFL tickets and a chance to win a Super Bowl trip. “It was hilarious,” Shyamalan shared.
“The cops were literally cheerleaders and mascots. These guys were dancing as they came in. And they were all caught. It was so twisted and funny.”
The film is described as "very scary and Hitchcockian," with Shyamalan emphasizing the importance of the concert scene. “I directed an entire concert! And it wasn’t just a thing in the background. It’s equally important. There is no pretend concert going on.”
Shyamalan’s blend of suspense and music mirrors Taylor Swift’s knack for surprising her fans. During her final Amsterdam concert on July 6, Swift performed “Mary’s Song (Oh My My),” a track she hadn’t played live in 16 years, much to the delight of her audience.
'Trap' also features Hayley Mills and Alison Pill, and promises a thrilling cinematic experience.
