Missy Elliott's performance at Rogers Arena in Vancouver was not only stellar in terms of the concert itself but also in its costumes.
This 24-city tour, which visits major cities across North America and concludes on August 22 in Rosemont, Illinois, represents the debut headlining tour for the multi-platinum-selling rapper, singer, songwriter, and producer.
Named "Out of This World," the tour also showcases Busta Rhymes, Ciara, and Timbaland.
“This is an incredible time in my life as I am experiencing so many milestone ‘firsts.’ Being the first female hip-hop artist to be inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame and now going out on my first headline tour,” stated the Grammy winning artist.
“Fans have been asking me to tour forever, but I wanted to wait until I felt the time was right because I knew if I was ever going to do it, I had to do it big, and I had to do it with family. So get ready to be taken ‘Out of This World’ with me, Busta Rhymes, Ciara and Timbaland.”
What did designer June Ambrose say about the aesthetics in Missy Elliott’s Out of This World tour?
To kick off the performance, “Missy comes from what I call the Juniverse, or the universe, and gets out of a spaceship with her moon men,” Ambrose explained. They are all dressed in spacesuits for the initial 10 songs.
The second segment aims to simulate an underwater experience and reflects concerns about climate issues and water conservation. Ambrose noted that the costumes are inspired by contemporary fashion trends.
In the third act, Elliott explores a red-light district atmosphere, Ambrose explained. "It's futuristic, vibrant, and alluringly sexy." The costumes are adorned with stones to emphasize Elliott's status as a rock star, according to Ambrose.
The last segment presents an "Old School" style “mixed with graffiti and streetwear,” Ambrose described. Featuring neon Dayglo patterns and baseball hats adorned with mohawks, it embodies a playful journey through hip-hop from the '80s and '90s into the future.
In general, Ambrose characterized the "Out of This World" show as “very high energy, fast paced. It’s a show you have to see over and over to discover everything you missed the first time."
