Steal their style

Four ‘recreatable’ celeb street looks that sent us shopping

While most celeb fashion is too bewildering to decipher, some fits are just too simple not to recreate. Photo: File

KARACHI:

Ever found yourself in the midst of an especially lengthy doomscrolling session, only to end up on some Instagram page dedicated to chronicling every street style look worn by every celebrity? While you aimlessly flick through every sheer-topped Kendall Jenner fit — man, she goes out a lot — that quiet condescending voice at the back of your mind creeps up and tells you you’ll never be able to pull this look off.

But wait! You’ve spotted a celebrity that actually dresses like you (on a good day). Half of their outfit resides in the shadowy recesses of your wardrobe, while the other half is probably just a 15-minute trip away at the mall. Here are 4 attainable celebrity street style looks that made us want to drop what we’re doing and make that trip to the mall:

Comfy-chic

First on the list is model Giselle Bundchen’s extremely dying-in-the-heat friendly look that she sported while walking her dog in Miami Beach. The all-white fit is so simple, that you probably won’t even have to buy something new, giving it a 10 out of 10 on the “recreatability” scale.

All you need is a slouchy linen top and baggy trousers. If you’re feeling particularly cheery that day, change up the colours, a sunny yellow is also perfect for summer. Combined with a stylish pair of sunglasses and your comfiest flip flops, you’ll be acing comfy-chic.

Perfectly printed

Dust off the penny loafers that haven’t seen the light of day since you first bought them years ago in an attempt to channel your classy vintage side. If you aren’t one of the ones who fell into the trend years ago, it’s time to do so now. Katie Holmes rocked the printed skirt and tee combo, with — you guessed it — penny loafers.

The mall will definitely cater to all penny-loafer-loving customers, but it may be tricky to find a printed skirt if the holiday season isn’t approaching. Fear not, for there is a backup. A quick trip to a cloth market — Ashiana, Gulf, Plaza — and you’ll be spoilt for choice with prints. Add in a particularly skilled (or even mediocre) tailor to the mix and you won’t be able to tell the difference between Katie’s uber-expensive outfit and yours.

The maternity look

For decades, maternity wear has been perceived as frumpy or lacking in style, perpetuating the misconception that pregnancy fashion cannot be fashionable. But modern maternity fashion is evolving, embracing chic cuts, flattering silhouettes, and fashionable trends. Just take a look at Hailey Bieber’s maternity style. Think Giselle’s dog-walking look, but better. The model stunned in an all-black ensemble which consisted of baggy low-waisted trousers (easy enough) and the slightly trickier-to-get-your-hands-on drop-shoulder top.

The Pakistani shopping scene unfortunately is not yet progressive enough to cater to the drop shoulder crowd, but if you’re lucky enough to stumble upon it in some back alley of a mall or the internet, then your outfit is complete. Otherwise, a normal black tee will do just fine. You can even pull it down your shoulder and pair it with a brightly coloured handbag for a more authentic Hailey look. Needless to say, pregnant or not, this look would compliment anyone.

Effortlessly smart

No list would be complete without one of J-Lo’s simple yet elegant street style moments. The singer’s white button-down, denim jeans and high-heel combo is an oldie, but it works. The mall is button-down heaven and if you don’t have a pair of denim jeans, that’s covered as well.

Local stores are the best place to look when you want to find western-style clothing at a cheaper price, albeit the fitting is slightly questionable when it comes to the jeans. It’ll be a case of trial and error until you find a pair that suits you.
