Will Smith gets jiggy with Kanye-inspired performance at BET Awards
The 2024 BET Awards witnessed an unexpected twist as Will Smith took the stage, delivering a performance that left viewers buzzing on social media.
As Smith premiered his new song "You Can Make It," his first original track since his 2017 EDM release "Get Lit," fans quickly noted a distinctive Kanye West influence in his delivery.
"Will borrowed Kanye Sunday service for tonight," remarked one viewer on X, formerly known as Twitter.
"This Will Smith performance is giving Kanye vibes," noted another, while a third humorously commented, "Will Smith cosplaying as Kanye West is killing me right now, but the song is beautiful."
The online chatter didn't stop there, with one user even jesting, "Kanye [is going to] diss Will Smith tomorrow."
Hosted by Taraji P. Henson, this year’s BET Awards at Los Angeles’ Peacock Theater was a platform for Smith to showcase "You Can Make It," featuring lyrics that struck a chord with many.
"Walking through the valley of the shadow of death," sings Smith, "And when you think you’ve got nothing left, keep going." These uplifting words, however, received mixed reactions.
"My thoughts, Not feeling Kanye Will Smith song," a user expressed disappointment, while another critiqued, "No Will," accusing him of "biting Eminem's old flow."
Despite the polarized responses, many fans celebrated the return of "The Fresh Prince" to music.
"Nobody can ever make me not like this guy," a staunch supporter declared, referencing the lingering public sentiment following Smith's infamous incident at the 94th Academy Awards, where he confronted Oscars host Chris Rock.
The performance also featured contributions from the Sunday Service choir, known for their collaborations with Kanye West, and singer-songwriter Fridayy, adding layers to the Kanye-esque vibe of the evening.
