Punjab on alert as monsoon rains commence
The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) has forecasted a 30% substantial increase in monsoon rains this year as the monsoon season begins across Punjab.
"Monsoon rains are predicted to start in Punjab from today," PDMA Director General Irfan Ali Kathia announced on Monday.
The PDMA outlines expectations for rainfall as follows: 15 to 50 millimetres in the first week of July; 25 to 35 millimetres in the second week; and 15 to 25 millimetres in Upper and South Punjab in the third week.
The fourth week of July could see rainfall between 50 to 70 millimetres.
Heavy thunderstorms and the risk of urban flooding and flash floods in hill torrents, particularly in Southern Punjab are anticipated.
Following directives from Punjab Chief Minister (CM) Maryam Nawaz Sharif, all relevant departments have been alerted.
PDMA DG Kathia has urged district administrations to ensure comprehensive safety measures during the monsoon.
"Ensure the cleaning of drains and complete drainage arrangements as soon as possible," Kathia instructed.
"With mutual cooperation and timely preparations, the damage from natural disasters can be mitigated."
He also urged the public to adopt safety measures during the rainy season.
"Keep children away from waterlogged areas, electrical wires, and poles," he stressed.
"The safety of citizens' lives and property is our highest priority."
The director general concluded that CM Maryam Nawaz has issued strict instructions, emphasising that there is no tolerance for negligence or irresponsibility.
