Lil Yachty and James Blake reveal ‘wild studio sessions’ with Young Thug
Lil Yachty and James Blake have formed one of the most intriguing collaborations in recent music history.
Despite their vastly different musical styles, the rapper and electronic balladeer have come together to create an entire album, "Bad Cameo," which is set to be released on June 28. Leading up to the release, they have been heavily promoting the project, sharing fascinating insights about their creative process.
During a recent appearance on the Safe Space Podcast, the duo shared a surprising anecdote about their shared admiration for Young Thug.
When asked about their wildest studio experiences, both artists singled out their sessions with the Atlanta rapper.
“Probably Young Thug, during COVID,” Blake quipped, with Lil Yachty quickly agreeing, “I was just about to say the same thing. Young Thug, for me, was definitely the craziest session ever.”
What makes this revelation even more interesting is that Lil Yachty and James Blake recorded with Young Thug at different times.
Lil Yachty described the chaotic environment of Thugger's studio sessions, saying, “It’s 60 people in a room, the mic’s in the room, he’s recording in the room. No one stops talking, it’s weed smoke, there’s nowhere to sit, the lights are low.”
Blake confirmed a similar experience but highlighted Thug's professionalism and focus during recording.
James Blake and Young Thug have previously collaborated on the track “Kisses Make Sure,” with Blake working with Thugger during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Meanwhile, Lil Yachty has multiple collaborations with Young Thug dating back to 2016, with the two maintaining a close relationship.
Yachty even scrapped an entire album based on Thug's candid feedback.
“One time I played [Lil Boat 3] for Young Thug,” Yachty told Pheno Bars in 2023. “He said it was dog sh*t, so I just started over.”
This brutal honesty has led Yachty to regard Thugger as one of the “greatest” of his generation.
