PFA foils bid to supply adulterated milk

The Punjab Food Authority has successfully foiled an attempt to supply adulterated milk in the twin cities, a spokesperson said on Tuesday.

According to the spokesperson, after destroying 9,000 litres of adulterated milk brought to Rawalpindi, Islamabad, the owners of 11 milk-carrying vehicles were fined more than Rs0.3 million.

The PFA spokesperson further said that it was secretly reported that the adulterated milk manufactured in Sargodha and other areas would be supplied in Rawalpindi, Islamabad. In light of the information, a special team will be formed.

The PFA staff started checking milk-carrying vehicles by cordoning off the Islamabad Motorway Toll Plaza yesterday morning. A modern mobile laboratory was used to check the milk carrying in vehicles. The special team checked the quality of milk in a total of 33 milk-carrying vehicles passing through the toll plaza, in which adulterated milk was found in 11 vehicles.

According to the mobile laboratory report, adulterated milk is the addition of other chemicals including water. The use of milk could spread various diseases in children and adults.

The spokesperson said that the authority had inspected a total of 223,000 litres of milk in 33 milk-carrying vehicles to identify adulterated milk. The milk in 11 milk-carrying vehicles was destroyed on the spot after it was found to be adulterated milk while the vehicle owners were also fined Rs310,000.

He said considering the rapid increase in the supply of adulterated milk, it has been decided that milk in all milk vehicles entering Rawalpindi Islamabad via GT Road and Motorway will be inspected on a daily basis so that an effort can be made to provide unadulterated milk to the citizens.
