Main bazaars to be shut from Muharram 7

Peshawar Deputy Commissioner, Afaq Wazir on Monday chaired a meeting to discuss the law and order situation, security and other arrangements during Muharram.

The meeting was attended by all stakeholders, including administrative officers, district department officials, PESCO and sui gas officials, Capital Metropolitan Government officials, Civil Defense officers, Rescue 1122 personnel, the President of Imamia Jirga, and other officials.

During the meeting, instructions were issued to complete the installation of CCTV cameras in Peshawar before Muharram, fix hanging electricity wires, control load shedding, and improve the sanitation situation.

It has been decided to close various markets in the old walled city of Peshawar on the last three days of Muharram as a security measure.

Official sources told The Express Tribune that it has been decided to close various markets, including Qisakhwani, Kochi Bazar, Mohalla Jhangi, Jahangirpura, Chitrali Bazar, Kohati, Church Road from Muharram 7.

Additionally, the entry of Afghan refugees into the city will be restricted, and an investigation of tenants in the city has been initiated prior to Muharram.

To ensure security, internal and external routes of various markets will be blocked, and check posts will be established at different locations in the city.

The city exits and entrances will also be blocked.

At the meeting, Shia leaders raised security concerns and issues with the official in a detailed manner. The DC attentively listened to their grievances and assured them of prompt resolution. The Shia leaders pledged their full support to the administration during Muharram, committing to collaborate in maintaining peace and harmony in Peshawar. DC instructed officials to expedite all necessary preparations for Muharram, emphasizing the timely completion of tasks.

Specific directives included ensuring cleanliness, prompt installation of CCTV cameras to effectively monitor the Muharram processions, and WAPDA officials should fix hanging wires.
