Ty Dolla $ign explains collaboration with Kanye West despite controversy
Ty Dolla $ign recently explained why he collaborated with Ye, formerly known as Kanye West, on their project Vultures 1, despite West’s controversial status.
In a Billboard feature published on June 20, the California artist stated his strong support for Ye. "Ye is the best artist of this generation, besides me, and I don’t give a f**k about what people were talking about,” Ty Dolla $ign said. “I know my n***a. He’s one of the best people I’ve ever met.”
Addressing concerns about the album's success due to West’s controversies, Ty Dolla $ign expressed confidence. “Just with my analysis of how it goes with him, he goes all the way to the top,” he explained. “And something may happen and he’ll say [something people find offensive] — and then people [get] right back, you know. Because this sh-t is undeniable.”
The article also revealed that Ty Dolla $ign played a key role in creating Vultures 1. He often brought songs to Ye that he had worked on solo or collaborated on, then they would refine them together. Their recording sessions spanned the globe, from hotel rooms in Japan and Italy to a villa loaned by Sting in Italy, and a converted hotel in Dubai.
Ye reciprocated the admiration during an interview with Big Boi’s Neighborhood, re-shared by Billboard. “Mike Dean was the kind of person that you can hand him something and he’ll hand you a finished product back. That’s how Ty is. You can give him something, even a murmur, and he’ll bring it back with the words, he can fix all the notes on it, he can bring in the drums, the music.”
Fans of Vultures 1 have more to look forward to, as Ty Dolla $ign confirmed that Vultures 2 is on the horizon. “We got all the songs. Basically, it’s just like, ‘How can we get it there? How can we go bigger than the first album?’” he said. He added, “Certain people will probably expect you to just do the same exact sound. But that sound’s already out.”
