Free WiFi service expanded to 200 spots

Police, family can be contacted in emergency

The Punjab Safe Cities Authority has expanded the CM Maryam Nawaz Free Wifi Service from 100 to 200 points in the provincial capital.

The free internet service has been started in Manga Mandi, Multan Road, Bund Road, Chung, Shah Pur Kanjran, Sundar, Valencia, Maraka and in other areas on the direction of Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif.

According to an official statement, the free emergency WiFi service is being provided for the citizens under the ‘digital Punjab’ vision.

Police and family members can be contacted in an emergency situation through the service.

The Women Safety and Punjab Police Apps along with WhatsApp can be used through the free connections.

The range of every free WiFi device is up to 300 feet from the relevant point in Lahore.

Various applications can be downloaded and the service can also be availed for booking a taxi.

However, the free service is not meant for entertainment applications.

Meanwhile, Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz was informed during a briefing that for the first time in the province, excess fare collected by transporters had bene paid back to the passengers. An amount of Rs1.467 million was returned to the passengers, while a fine of Rs2.78 million was imposed on the transporters charging more than the official rate.

On the first day of an operation, fare lists were checked in 3,220 vehicles and passengers asked about the fare charged. As a result, 1,448 vehicles were challaned for violation, 354 were stopped from plying and nine cases of overcharging registered.

The CM was informed that the checking had been conducted in districts across the province.
