Watch Bridgerton star Luke Newton recite Sabrina Carpenter's 'Espresso' lyrics on The Tonight Show
Bridgerton's Luke Newton joined the Sabrina Carpenter "Espresso" craze during his June 19 appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.
Newton, 31, known for his role as Colin Bridgerton in the popular Netflix drama, demonstrated his ability to make anything sound "romantic" by reciting lines from Carpenter's hit song in character.
"Say you can't sleep / Baby, I know / That's that me / Espresso," Newton recited, looking into the camera while Bridgerton-inspired music played in the background.
Host Jimmy Fallon, 49, introduced the segment by saying, "Everyone thinks that you can make anything sound romantic... and sexy."
He then challenged Newton to read random modern pop culture lines as his character Colin, suggesting, "I thought if we gave you some random lines from modern pop culture, maybe you'd be able to show us how Colin Bridgerton would say them if he was talking to Penelope."
Newton's performance was a nod to his onscreen love interest, Penelope Featherington, played by Nicola Coughlan.
Carpenter, 25, had recently discussed her song "Espresso" in an interview with Rolling Stone published on June 17. "My mom has been like, ‘Do you feel crazy right now?’” Carpenter said.
“I just love that people get my sense of humor." The song was inspired by a crêperie in France, and Carpenter mentioned collaborating with songwriters Steph Jones and Amy Allen, and producer Julian Bunetta.
"That’s the only way those borderline idiotic-slash-funniest lyrics can happen,” she explained. “I’ve really honed in on the people that I love making music with.”
Carpenter also shared news about her upcoming sixth studio album, Short n’ Sweet, set to release on Aug. 23. Earlier this month, she teased the album on social media, announcing, "Available starting JUNE 28th!!!!!"
