In a statement issued by the Pakistan Tanners Association on Wednesday, it has been revealed that over three days of Eid ul Adha, more than 680,000 livestock were sacrificed across Pakistan valued at over Rs500 billion.

According to Agha Syedain, a Central Executive Committee member of the association, the sacrificial animals included 290,000 cows, 330,000 goats, 385,000 sheep, and 98,000 camels. Additionally, 165,000 water buffalo were also sacrificed in adherence to religious obligations, he stated.

The total financial value of the sacrificed animals exceeded Rs500 billion with estimates suggesting that the hides alone are valued at approximately Rs85 billion.

The association further expressed concerns about the potential loss of 40% of hides due to extreme heat and inadequate handling caused by climatic changes.

Typically, the leather industry fulfills 20% of its annual demand for hides during Eid ul Adha. However, this year, there are apprehensions that the current supply may fall short by more than 20%.
