Pixar's 'Inside Out 2' broke box-office records over the weekend, earning an estimated $295 million worldwide, making it the highest-grossing global opening for an animated film.
According to Disney, the movie's ticket sales in North America reached around $155 million, surpassing Dune: Part Two for the year's top opening weekend.
This performance is a major win for cinemas, which have seen weak box office returns for many new releases this year. Inside Out 2's debut weekend significantly outperformed the original film's $90 million opening, which later grossed $858 million globally.
In the North American market, Inside Out 2 secured the second-best opening for Pixar, just behind the 2018 release of The Incredibles 2, as reported by BoxOfficeMojo.
The impressive opening weekend gives Pixar a much-needed boost after several of its recent releases had relatively weak openings.
Inside Out 2, the first sequel to the 2015 Oscar-winning hit, introduces new emotional themes such as envy and anxiety, building on the original's focus on joy, fear, and anger. The film's successful launch is a bright spot in an otherwise slow start to the summer for film companies.
