Joe Alwyn has spoken publicly for the first time about his breakup with Taylor Swift, over a year after their split in April 2023. In an interview with The Sunday Times Style Magazine, the actor discussed the challenges of navigating the end of their six-and-a-half-year relationship, emphasising the difficulties of such a private matter becoming public.

“One week later, it’s suddenly in the public domain and the outside world is able to weigh in,” Alwyn told the publication. He expressed hope that people could empathise with the complexities of ending a long-term, loving relationship. He described the transition from a “very real” personal experience to being dissected in the “very unreal space” of tabloids, social media, and the press as challenging. “There is always going to be a gap between what is known and what is said. I have made my peace with that,” Alwyn added.

Alwyn's comments came ahead of the release of his upcoming film, Yorgos Lanthimos’ "Kinds of Kindness," scheduled for June 21. Despite the public interest in his past relationship with Swift, Alwyn reiterated his desire to keep private details private. “It was never something to commodify, and I see no reason to change that now,” he stated. Reflecting on his current state, he said, “I feel fortunate to be in a really great place in my life — professionally and personally. I feel really good.”

Swift's latest album, "The Tortured Poets Department," which includes songs like “So Long, London” and “The Black Dog,” has been speculated to address their breakup. The album's name bears resemblance to a WhatsApp group chat Alwyn shares with Andrew Scott and Paul Mescal, called The Tortured Man Club. Alwyn did not confirm if he had listened to the album, but he acknowledged the speculation surrounding it.

In the interview, Alwyn also discussed his experience working with director Yorgos Lanthimos for the second time on "Kinds of Kindness," which stars Emma Stone, Willem Dafoe, Margaret Qualley, Jesse Plemons, and Hunter Schafer. Alwyn plays a single father trying to retrieve his wife (Stone) from a cult. “Even though Yorgos really goes into dark corners in his work, he keeps a light atmosphere on set,” Alwyn noted.

Following their breakup, Swift has entered a public relationship with Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce. She was seen attending multiple Chiefs football games, including the Super Bowl, where the team secured their second consecutive win.
