Tejano music champion Johnny Canales passes away at 77
The world of Tejano music mourns the passing of Johnny Canales, a legendary TV host, musician, and tireless promoter of the genre.
Canales died on Thursday at the age of 77, as confirmed by his wife Nora Canales in a social media post.
Texas Senator Juan "Chuy" Hinojosa paid tribute to Canales, calling him "an icon, an entertainer, and a leader" who expanded the reach of Tejano and Latino music. Canales, a native of Robstown, Texas, was best known for his infectious catchphrase "You got it, Take it Away!"
More than just a catchy phrase, Canales' show, "El Show de Johnny Canales," was a launching pad for countless Tejano and Latin American artists. Debuting in 1983, the program initially aired in Texas before reaching a national audience in the United States and eventually broadcasting in 23 other countries.
From Selena to Bronco, Ramon Ayala to Bobby Pulido, Canales' show provided a platform for some of Tejano's biggest names.
For over four decades, Canales was a fixture in Tejano music. The show's name later evolved to "El Show de Johnny y Nora Canales" as his wife joined him on-screen. Canales' legacy extends far beyond his own music career - he will be remembered as a pivotal figure who brought the vibrant sounds of Tejano to a global audience.
