Olympic figure skater Michelle Kwan pays tribute to late skating coach Frank Carroll

Olympic figure skater Michelle Kwan expressed her sorrow over the passing of her longtime coach and friend, Frank Carroll, who died at the age of 85 on Sunday.

In an Instagram tribute, Kwan shared cherished memories and photographs spanning their 30-year relationship. She recalled their first meeting when she was just 11 years old, affectionately calling him "Frank" despite his initial preference for "Mr. Carroll."

Kwan described Carroll as a "rock-solid supporter," a "fountain of knowledge," and a "dear friend." She praised his unwavering dedication, missing not a single lesson throughout their time together. Carroll's wealth of figure skating history, including stories about Olympic champions and American greats, fascinated Kwan.

Beyond his coaching expertise, Carroll's ability to bring laughter to the ice rink endeared him to Kwan and many other skaters. She expressed her gratitude for being one of the "lucky ones" to have worked with him and considered him a true friend.

U.S. Figure Skating confirmed Carroll's passing, acknowledging his significant contributions to the sport. In addition to Kwan, Carroll coached several Olympic figure skaters, including Linda Fratianne, Evan Lysacek, and Gracie Gold.
