Three suspects in Gadani murder case held: Sharjeel
Sindh Senior Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon on Monday acknowledged the efforts of the Ghotki police and DIG Sukkur, who have arrested three suspects in murder case of journalist Nasrullah Gadani.
Speaking at the Karachi Press Club, Sharjeel expressed deep sorrow over the tragic death of the journalist. He said that the killing of Gadani reflects a mindset aiming to suppress the freedom of press. He stated that it is the responsibility of the government to combat this mindset.
Sharjeel assured the media that they will be kept informed of any developments in the case.
"Today, we are providing a relief cheque to the family of the martyred journalist. While money cannot replace a loved one, we extend our deepest sympathies to Gadani's family," he said.
Following the instructions of the Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah, a relief cheque of Rs10 million is being given to the journalist's family.
"The minister said that Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) stands firmly with journalists and actively supports journalism," he stated.
He recalled that when journalists protested at the Sindh Assembly demanding the arrest of Gadani's killers, both the interior minister and he assured them of a swift action, adding that the accused have been arrested, and action will be taken against those responsible for the murder.
Responding to a query, the minister clarified that the PPP is not involved with the defamation bill introduced in Punjab, noting that the PPP-affiliated governor of Punjab did not sign the bill.
Sharjeel highlighted the Sindh government's track record of arresting those responsible for attacks on journalists, citing the apprehension of Shaheed Aziz Memon's killers from the desert area.
He also mentioned that PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari personally visited the family of Shaheed Jan Muhammad Mahar.
He added that progress has been made in Mahar's case, with anticipated news of his killers' arrests.
Moreover, the ongoing province-wide crackdown on drugs has led to recent arrests of drug peddlers in Karachi and Hyderabad, including a notorious dealer allegedly involved in trafficking ice and crystals.
