The cast of Netflix's 'Baby Reindeer' decided against watching Fiona Harvey's interview on 'Piers Morgan: Uncensored,' where the alleged real-life inspiration for the character Martha Scott claimed the show misrepresented her behaviour.
Nava Mau, who plays Teri in the series, revealed this decision during the 2024 Gotham TV Awards in New York City. Harvey's interview, aired in May, stirred controversy as she claimed the show was fictionalised and that she received death threats and harassment due to the online speculation.
'Baby Reindeer,' adapted from Richard Gadd's autobiographical one-man show, explores Gadd's experiences with stalking and sexual assault. Mau's co-star, Jessica Gunning, who portrays Martha Scott in the show, previously stated she hadn't engaged with the real-world fallout from the series, expressing concern for Gadd's well-being as a survivor of sexual assault.
Gadd himself has also discouraged fans from identifying the real-life individuals who inspired the characters, emphasising that the show's purpose isn't to expose them.
Despite the controversy, Mau expressed gratitude for the conversations sparked by the show regarding abuse, trauma, and shame. She believes the series has reached its intended audience and is pleased to see people engaging with these difficult topics in their own way.
While the cast has opted to distance themselves from the real-life drama surrounding 'Baby Reindeer,' their decision reflects a commitment to respecting Gadd's experiences and the sensitive themes explored in the series.
