Robert De Niro speaks out on Trump verdict during ‘Ezra’ film promotion: "Justice was served"
Robert De Niro, the legendary actor known for his outspoken political views, recently made headlines not just for his new movie 'Ezra,' but also for his candid reaction to the conviction of former President Donald Trump.
De Niro, who made an unexpected appearance at a Joe Biden campaign event near the trial venue, shared his thoughts shortly after Trump was found guilty on all 34 counts of falsifying business records, aimed at suppressing a potential scandal during his 2016 campaign.
Speaking to Variety in New York City, where he was promoting 'Ezra,' De Niro expressed his distress over the political drama unfolding around him.
"This never should have gotten to this stage. I don’t want to be talking, but I am so upset by it. I have to say something. This is my country. This guy wants to destroy it. Period. He’s crazy," he stated firmly.
The verdict was delivered on a Thursday, with Trump's sentencing scheduled for July 11, just before the Republican National Convention.
De Niro also touched on the broader implications of the trial's outcome, suggesting it might influence the upcoming presidential election. "I think it would," he said when asked about the potential political repercussions.
Moreover, De Niro acknowledged concerns for his personal safety given his vocal opposition to Trump.
"You think about that. It makes me more angry, but I have to be afraid to be intimidated. And that’s why I said, you’re not going to intimidate us. People are fed up, they’re going to fight back. That’s not what we’re about in this country," he declared.
