LAHORE:

Proposals to regulate unnecessary commercial use of agricultural land were considered in a meeting of a special committee constituted by Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif. Punjab Local Government Minister Zeeshan Rafique presided over the meeting.

He said agriculture is the backbone of Punjab's economy. "Effective monitoring of commercial use of agricultural land without planning is essential. If necessary, new legislation can be made in this regard." He also said that the real estate business provides employment to a large number of people. While enacting new legislation, care must be taken to balance the agricultural and commercial use of land. He said there should be a definite mechanism for registration of housing societies.

The advocate general and secretaries of local government and law briefed the committee on various legal aspects. Reports of two sub-committees were also presented. Agriculture Minister Ashiq Hussain Kirmani said that in order to meet the growing residential needs, it is necessary to ensure prudent use of the available land and move towards the culture of high-rise buildings.

He said it is necessary to bring the illegal housing schemes under the ambit of law so that the public confidence in the real estate business can increase. Our Correspondent
