Severe wind storm, lightning claim six lives in Punjab
A devastating wind storm and lightning strikes have claimed the lives of at least six citizens and left five others injured across Punjab.
According to the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA), the fatalities were reported from the districts of Sialkot and Rawalpindi.
In a telephonic communication with the deputy commissioners (DCs) of the affected districts, DG PDMA Irfan Ali Kathia issued directives to ensure the best possible medical care for the injured. He also announced that financial assistance would be provided to the families of the deceased.
"The loss of human lives is extremely regrettable. Combating natural calamities is only possible with joint and mutual cooperation," Kathia stated.
He stressed the need for all organisations, including rescue services, to remain on high alert.
Kathia further relayed Chief Minister Punjab Maryam Nawaz's strict instructions that any negligence or irresponsibility will not be tolerated.
He urged the public to stay indoors during bad weather and to avoid unnecessary travel. "Stay in safe places during thunderstorms and avoid going under the open sky," he advised.
In the wake of this incident, the PDMA spokesperson reminded citizens to call the PDMA helpline at 1129 in case of emergencies.
In a related development, given the Pakistan Meteorological Department's forecast of potential Glacial Lake Outburst Floods (GLOF) in K-P and G-B, the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has issued directives to the provincial disaster management authorities of K-P and G-B.
The department predicts that GLOF, severe floods, landslides, and strong winds are likely to increase in the mountainous regions of K-P and G-B from May 21 to 27.
In response, the NDMA has instructed all disaster management authorities to maintain full communication with relevant departments.
The NDMA has directed the pre-deployment and provision of necessary equipment and inventory in case of obstructions, road closures, and damage, ensuring the availability of emergency personnel at vulnerable locations.
Authorities are also to alert local communities, tourists, and travellers about high-risk areas and advise against unnecessary travel and movement in advance.
Furthermore, the NDMA has instructed that concerned departments organise mock exercises to ensure timely evacuation of people in at-risk areas, aiming to protect lives and property when needed.
