Spider-Gwen’s costume has always featured sweet kicks, no matter the storyline or medium.
Since her first appearance in Edge of Spiderverse #2 to her role in Into the Spider-Verse, Gwen Stacy has consistently showcased impressive footwear, making it a prominent aspect of her character.
Speaking to Looper, Stephanie Phillips, the writer behind Spider-Gwen: The Ghost-Spider, acknowledges that the addition of Spider-Gwen's new shoes was optional and could have been omitted entirely.
The cover art for issue #1, illustrated by artist Mark Brooks, would continue to showcase the sneakers prominently, while their presence in the interior pages might have been reduced. However, Phillips revealed that "every artist" expressed a desire to include the kicks in the comics.
“[Mark Brooks] started that and then they made their way into the interior pages. Initially editorial was like, ‘You don’t have to keep drawing the sneakers’. But every artist was like, ‘No, we love the sneakers. We want to keep the sneakers.’ And I was like, ‘So we’re all getting custom sneakers when? Because I love these,’” Stephanie Phillips explained.
In an instant, the dedicated creators of Spider-Gwen: The Ghost-Spider took on the task of ensuring that Gwen's new sneakers remain a prominent feature of her costume going forward, a change that is sure to excite every Marvel Comics fan.
