Ryan Reynolds surprised fans by revealing Disney's green light for an R-rated ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ movie.

Previously known for family-friendly content, Disney's decision to stay true to the franchise's tone is being hailed as a bold move.

Reynolds, who reprises his role as Deadpool, expressed his gratitude to the studio in a recent interview with Fandango.

“I'm really proud of them for doing this,” he remarked. “[It's] a huge step for them...it adds a whole other color to this kaleidoscopic wheel that is that company and the different people that they have been entertaining forever.”

Concerns arose after Disney acquired Fox, home to the original ‘Deadpool’ films. Fans worried the character's signature dark humor would be sacrificed. However, both Reynolds and director Shawn Levy were assured the R-rating would remain.

“There's no other way to do it,” Reynolds explained, adding, “[The R rating] really [allowed] us to do anything and everything in a world where anything and everything is possible.”

Director Shawn Levy also recently told the Associated Press that fans would not need previous knowledge from other movies to enjoy his upcoming film.

“This movie is built for entertainment, with no obligation to come prepared with prior research,” he said.
