Francis Ford Coppola's "Megalopolis" received a 10-minute standing ovation at the Cannes Film Festival, yet the film has ignited both praise and criticism, leaving critics divided and even questioning their own opinions.

The film, a $120 million passion project funded by Coppola himself, boasts a star-studded cast including Adam Driver, Aubrey Plaza, Shia LaBeouf, Jon Voight, and Dustin Hoffman. Coppola, undeterred by financial concerns, expressed his unwavering belief in pursuing his creative vision.

Critics' responses to the film have been mixed, with some hailing it as a "great leap" while others deem it a "mess." Manohla Dargis of The New York Times acknowledged the film's unique style, stating it may not be for everyone, but praised its artistic merit. Deadline described the movie as both unruly and stunning, highlighting its ambitious nature.

The Hollywood Reporter, on the other hand, questioned the film's overall quality while acknowledging its undeniable impact. The mixed reviews have even sparked confusion about the film's premise, with some critics questioning its central message.

Adding to the controversy surrounding the film are allegations of inappropriate behaviour by Coppola on set. Anonymous sources claimed to the Guardian that he engaged in unwanted physical contact with female extras and made them feel uncomfortable. Executive producer Darren Demetre denied these allegations, attributing Coppola's actions to his attempts to create a festive atmosphere during a club scene.

Despite the mixed reception and controversy, "Megalopolis" has undeniably generated buzz at Cannes. Whether the film will resonate with a wider audience remains to be seen, but it has already sparked debate and discussion about its artistic value and the behaviour of its director.
