Steve Buscemi assault: Attacker charged in held on $50,000 bail

The man accused of assaulting actor Steve Buscemi in Manhattan has been held in jail on $50,000 bail.

Clifton Williams has been accused of punching actor Steve Buscemi in the face on a Manhattan street and has been held in jail on $50,000 bail, police sources informed CBS New York. The 66-year-old actor, known for his roles in "Boardwalk Empire'' and "Fargo," was walking in Midtown Manhattan on May 8 when he was attacked by a stranger.

One is a misdemeanour, but the attack on Buscemi was upgraded to a felony because the actor is 66 years old, a senior citizen in the eyes of the law. Police arrested the suspect on Friday, three days after releasing his photo. The 50-year-old man was arraigned on Saturday and a judge set bail at $50,000. It is unclear if the defendant has an attorney representing him.

Buscemi's publisher confirmed the attack and stated that the actor received treatment for eye injuries but was otherwise unharmed.

The criminal complaint alleges that the suspect punched two people, including Buscemi, with the attack on the actor captured by surveillance video. However, authorities have not released the names of the victims.

This incident follows another attack on a "Boardwalk Empire" actor in March when Michael Stuhlbarg was struck in the back of the neck with a rock in Central Park.

The suspect in the Buscemi assault is scheduled to appear in court again on Thursday.
