SNL: Colin Jost and Michael Che talk Kendrick Lamar, Scarlett Johansson and more in Joke Swap
Saturday Night Live's “Weekend Update” featured co-anchors Colin Jost and Michael Che continuing their joke-swapping routine.
Che playfully apologized for a past prank, saying: “The last time I tricked you into thinking you had invited a civil rights hero, and that was low. So to make it up to you this time, I invited an actual, practicing rabbi.”
Jost responded by addressing the Jerry Seinfeld commencement speech at Duke where pro-Palestinian students were seen walking out.
On several occasions, Seinfeld and his wife have expressed their support for Israel amid its war on Gaza, resulting in a death toll of over 35,000 Palestinians and 1,400 Israelis.
About students leaving, Jost sarcastically read, “I think that's disgraceful. During these difficult times it's important to support our Jewish friends. That's why the only chant you'll hear from me is, 'Free [Harvey] Weinstein!'”
Che kept the jokes rolling with another one about Jost's wife, Scarlett Johansson. This time, the joke revolved around ChatGPT releasing a voice assistant inspired by the film ‘Her,’ which Johansson starred in.
Che joked, “I've never bothered to watch because without that body, what's the point of listening?”
Jost retorted, “So, rabbi, if you're here, who is controlling the weather?” seemingly trying to start a feud between his co-host and Kendrick Lamar after the rapper and Drake sparred.
“Kendrick Lamar! Nooo! Your war with Drake may be over but your war with Michael Che is just beginning. So, to quote Hamilton, shoot your shot player,” Che responded, before playfully acknowledging Jost's effort, “That was pretty well done, man.”
Jost then read the following joke and asked the rabbi to “be a mensch” by handing him a puppet to tell the next joke.
“It was reported that Comcast, the owners of NBC, told MSNBC to curb their criticism of Israel, and if they don't, we'll hit them with our space lasers,” Jost read, completely breaking down in laughter.
This weekend’s SNL episode also featured Sabrina Carpenter as the season finale’s performer, as well as a monologue by actor Jake Gyllenhaal.
