Fab to drab: Why Aishwarya Rai’s Cannes 2024 look misses the mark

Actor's striking Falguni Shane Peacock gown turned heads but not all were impressed

The Cannes Film Festival is known for its dazzling array of glamourous gowns and high fashion. Still, Bollywood icon Aishwarya Rai Bachchan's latest red carpet appearance has sparked a wave of mixed reactions from fashion critics and fans alike.

On the prestigious red carpet, Aishwarya made a statement in a striking black gown adorned with bold gold and white accents by Indian designer Falguni Shane Peacock. Designed to capture attention, the dress featured several distinctive elements that drew a variety of opinions.

The gown's design combined a fitted black base with large gold appliqués, creating a stark contrast that overwhelmed the ensemble instead of making a big statement. Adding another layer of could-have-done-without-this are the voluminous white sleeves that billow around her shoulders, making her form appear rather unflattering.

While puff sleeves beckon the feminine mystique of Renaissance, on Aishwarya’s ensemble they drive even the salvageable details to the point of being heavy-handed. What could have worked really well if not for the sleeves is the gold detailing. Tragically, instead of bringing a touch of elegance, in this case, it distracts from the overall silhouette and harmony of the dress.

Adding to the drama was the train of the dress, which was covered in intricate gold and white elements. While designed to make a statement, the busy design of the train further detracted from the elegance typically expected at Cannes. On the accessory front, Aishwarya paired the gown with large gold hoop earrings, which, while intended to complement the gold elements of the dress, contributed to the overall busyness of the look.

Despite the varied opinions, there is no denying that the Devdas star fashion choices continue to capture global attention. As one of Bollywood's most iconic stars, her appearances on red carpets are always eagerly anticipated and hotly debated. Her bold choice may not have pleased everyone, but it certainly kept all eyes on her at the 77th Cannes Film Festival.
