Former Doctor Who showrunner Steven Moffat has confirmed he wrote the upcoming Christmas special titled 'Joy to the World'. This marks Moffat's 50th script for the revived series.

Speaking to TV Choice magazine, Moffat hinted this could be his final contribution to the show.

"There are other things coming for me, so I might never write for Doctor Who again," he said. "As I got to the end of Joy to the World, I did think, 'Is that it? My final moment?'"

Even though Moffat previously denied his involvement in the current season, this recent interview suggests he may have been deceitful with his answer.

The Christmas special is set to air in December 2024 and will feature Ncuti Gatwa as the Doctor alongside Bridgerton actress Nicola Coughlan as a one-time companion. The episode is set during World War II.

News of Moffat's return was leaked earlier this year when actress Alison Sterling's CV listed her involvement in the 2024 Christmas special with Moffat as the writer, so this recent news doesn’t really come off as an suprise.
