Stephanie Skinner, the runner-up for the 2023 Miss Teen USA, has turned down the winning title following the resignation of the initial winner, UmaSofia Srivastava. Skinner, crowned Miss New York Teen USA in 2023, announced her decision on Instagram on May 12, expressing her support for Srivastava and detailing her own career commitments.

Skinner, reflecting on her experiences, stated that she did not make the decision lightly. "In light of recent events, I have decided to decline the title of Miss Teen USA," she wrote. She highlighted her commitment to a global research opportunity in Thailand that requires her to live abroad for the summer. Skinner also voiced her support for Srivastava and Noelia Vogt, who recently resigned from Miss USA.

The 19-year-old, a rising junior at the University of Pennsylvania, emphasised the importance of female empowerment and using one's voice. "I stand for female empowerment and believe everyone deserves the power to use their voices," she stated. Skinner concluded her statement by expressing her desire to inspire young women through her social media presence.

Srivastava, who stepped down as Miss Teen USA on May 8, cited a misalignment with the organisation's direction. She expressed gratitude for her support system and plans to continue her advocacy work, including her multilingual children's book, "The White Jaguar."

Noelia Voigt also resigned from her title as Miss USA to prioritise her mental health. Voigt, the first Venezuelan-American to win Miss USA, highlighted her advocacy for anti-bullying and cleft palate correction during her reign.

The resignations have drawn attention to concerns within the Miss Universe Organization. Claudia Michelle, the former social media director for Miss USA, resigned, citing poor treatment of titleholders and workplace toxicity. She claimed that both Voigt and Srivastava were threatened by the organisation for sharing personal advocacies on social media.

Skinner's decision to decline the Miss Teen USA title underscores her commitment to her values and career, and her support for fellow pageant contestants facing similar challenges.
