Bill Hader to deliver Chapman University commencement speech and receive honorary doctorate
Bill Hader, an acclaimed comedian and actor known for his eight-year stint on Saturday Night Live, is set to deliver a commencement address at Chapman University this Friday.
Hader will also be honoured with an honorary doctorate degree during the ceremony at Wilson Field.
Throughout his career, Hader has earned 29 Emmy nominations and secured three wins.
Since his departure from SNL in 2013, he has expanded his horizons to include acting, directing, and producing.
His work on the HBO dark comedy Barry, particularly its final season in 2023, brought him critical acclaim with 11 Emmy and two Golden Globe nominations.
Chapman University President Daniele Struppa praised Hader, stating, “Bill Hader is a true inspiration to our graduating students, embodying a spirit of curiosity and perseverance.”
Hader, originally from Tulsa, Oklahoma, has recently developed a connection with Chapman University. In March, he led a master class at Dodge College of Film and Media Arts, where he shared valuable industry insights and personal anecdotes.
Reflecting on his journey from a young filmmaker to a Hollywood mainstay, Hader recounted a pivotal moment when Ben Stiller noticed his work, eventually leading to roles in major films such as Tropic Thunder.
During the master class, Hader encouraged students with these words: “Expressing yourself doesn’t mean doing what everybody else is liking,” he said. “Just do it. Make sure you’re constantly making stuff.”
For those unable to attend in person, Chapman University will stream the commencement ceremony, including Hader’s speech, live on YouTube on Friday.
