Stevie Wonder arrives in Ghana in time to celebrate his 74th birthday
Fans are speculating whether this will be a permanent move for the Grammy-winning artist.
US music legend Stevie Wonder has arrived in Ghana after stating in 2021 that he wanted to permanently move to the West African country.
The 74-year-old Grammy Award winner was greeted by fans and industry players at Kotoka International Airport on Monday morning, causing fans to speculate if this marks a permanent relocation to the African country.
A local cultural group welcomed him with a traditional performance, playing the drums while some members danced. Impressed by the Kpanlogo drums, the music legend joyfully joined in, playing the instrument with excitement.
He greeted his fans warmly before continuing with his activities.
In February 2021, the award-winning performer spoke to Oprah Winfrey in an interview, discussing his decision to relocate to Ghana, citing the political turmoil in the United States.
“I wanna see this nation smile again. And I want to see it before I leave to travel to move to Ghana because I’m going to do that.”
Winfrey then inquired, "Are you planning to permanently relocate to Ghana?"
"I am," replied the singer, further stating, “I don’t want to see my children’s children’s children have to say, ‘Oh please like me. Please respect me, please know that I am important, please value me.’ What is that?”
This isn't the first time Stevie Wonder, renowned for songs like "Happy Birthday" and "I Just Called to Say I Love You," has mentioned considering a move to Ghana.
In 1994, he expressed feeling a stronger sense of community in Ghana compared to the US.
Stevie Wonder was born in Michigan and mastered the piano, drums, and harmonica by age 9. He signed with Motown Records in 1961 and has achieved remarkable success, winning 25 Grammy Awards, including an honorary award, and receiving 74 nominations.
