Halle Bailey opens up about facing "severe" postpartum depression

"The Little Mermaid" actor describes feeling overwhelmed and disconnected from her own body after giving birth.

Halle Bailey has shared her experience with postpartum depression on social media.

The singer and actor, who welcomed her son, Halo, in January 2023 with boyfriend, DDG, spoke out about her struggles in a recent Snapchat video on Tuesday April 16th.

Bailey, known for her role in "The Little Mermaid," described feeling overwhelmed and disconnected from her own body after giving birth. "I have severe postpartum [depression]," she shared, highlighting her own challenges with adjusting to motherhood.

"Before I had a child and I would hear people talk about postpartum, it would kind of just go in one ear and out the other,” Bailey explained. “I didn't realize how serious of a thing it actually was."

She further detailed her experience living through the illness, “I feel like a completely different person. When I look in the mirror, I just feel like I'm in a whole new body. Like, I don't know who I am.”

The Little Mermaid actor used a relevant metaphor, telling fans that her condition feels like “swimming in this ocean that's like the biggest waves you've ever felt and you're trying not to drown. And you're trying to come up for air.”

Despite her love for her son, Halo, Bailey admitted to feeling anxious when separated from him – even for “30 minutes.”

She added, “It has nothing to do with my baby. It has everything to do with me and who I am right now… especially [since] social media is just not a good thing to be on when you have postpartum.”

Bailey described how negative comments about her family “triggered” her. However, she mentioned that she continues to be supported by her boyfriend, YouTuber and rapper DDG, whom she called “the most amazing daddy ever.”
