K-P to move SC against oath taking issue
The Pakhtunkhwa government decided on Monday to approach the Supreme Court to challenge the Peshawar High Court (PHC) order for convening of the provincial Assembly session to administer oath to members named by the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) on the reserved seats.
The provincial cabinet approved the government decision through a circular summary. The government also decided that until the decision of the Supreme Court, the provincial assembly session would not called. It is expected that the appeal would be filed in the apex court in a day or two.
The provincial government claimed that the reserved seats allocated to the opposition parties by the ECP were actually its right. Because of the delay in administering the oath to the lawmakers on the reserved seats for women and minorities, the opposition moved the PHC.
The PHC ruled in favour of the opposition and ordered the provincial assembly speaker to convene the assembly session, so that the lawmakers could take oath. However, no session was convened. Because of the oath issue, the ECP did not hold the Senate elections in the K-P Assembly earlier this month.
