Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy’s Diane von Furstenberg docufilm to debut on June 25
A new documentary celebrating the legendary fashion designer Diane von Furstenberg is set to premiere on Hulu on June 25. Titled Diane von Furstenberg: Woman in Charge, the film is co-directed by two-time Academy Award-winning filmmaker Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy and Trish Dalton. The documentary aims to provide an in-depth look into von Furstenberg’s influential career and her role as a pioneering woman in the fashion industry.
The film is produced by Fabiola Beracasa Beckman, Tracy Aftergood, Sean Stuart, alongside directors Sharmeen and Trish. According to People, the documentary’s first look hints at an artistic exploration of von Furstenberg's life, highlighting her introduction of the iconic wrap dress in 1974, a design celebrated for its universally flattering silhouette.
This year marks the nearing 50th anniversary of the wrap dress, a milestone that coincides with von Furstenberg's retrospective exhibit "Woman Before Fashion" at the Fashion and Lace Museum in Brussels. The documentary promises to deliver an unprecedented look at von Furstenberg's non-stop life as a cultural luminary.
Sharmeen took to Instagram to express her excitement at the film’s upcoming release. Sharing behind-the-scenes pictures, the Ms Marvel director penned, “It took two years, many many sleepless nights and a village to create our film about the legendary Diane von Furstenberg.”
“On June 25, Diane Von Fürstenberg: Woman in Charge will stream on Hulu and Disney+,” Sharmeen announced. “We cannot wait for you to watch! Here are some BTS with the badass women who worked their magic! Missing among them are our fab editors and composer.”
At 77, von Furstenberg reflects on her career and her ability to challenge the male-dominated fashion industry with her innovative designs and strong business acumen. The film will explore how she never saw herself as a victim of sexism but instead used her femininity and strength to forge a path for future generations of women.
Diane von Furstenberg: Woman in Charge will not only celebrate her career achievements but also delve into her recent endeavors, such as a collaboration with Target which features a 200-piece assortment that brings her timeless design to a new generation. In interviews, von Furstenberg has expressed pride in her work's longevity and the dynamic movement of her prints, which contribute to the enduring appeal of her dresses.
As the documentary is set to release, fans of fashion and documentary filmmaking alike are eagerly anticipating this intimate exploration of one of the fashion industry's most iconic figures.
