Rihanna and A$AP Rocky: From friendship to family
Rihanna and A$AP Rocky built a strong foundation of friendship before their romance blossomed. In a recent Interview cover story, Rihanna, 36, discussed their long history and the natural progression of their relationship.
The pair's connection began professionally, collaborating on Rihanna's "Cockiness (Love It)" remix and performing together at the MTV VMAs. A shared creative vision and appearing in each other's work, like A$AP's "Fashion Killa" video, kept them connected. Despite not officially dating until late 2019, their bond was undeniable.
"We saw fashion the same. We saw creative the same...we ended up supporting each other’s brands...I would wear his s---, he would show up to my launches," Rihanna explained.
This familiarity gave them unique insight into each other's approach to relationships. "I’ve seen him in relationships. He’s seen me in relationships...We knew what we’re capable of, and the trouble that we could bring to each other’s lives," Rihanna said. This led to a cautious start to their romance.
"I just let whatever was supposed to happen, happen," she recalled.
Their relationship was confirmed in November 2020, and they now share two sons, RZA and Riot. Rihanna believes the pandemic accelerated their connection, preparing them for parenthood. "COVID sped up our relationship... we were going to start a family," she said.
Forced togetherness during the pandemic made their long-term compatibility clear. "It was the best thing that ever happened to us," Rihanna shared.
She credits letting go of control and trusting in their bond as key to her happiness. "I let God lead," she said. After previous relationships left her feeling inadequate, Rihanna appreciates A$AP fully seeing and believing in her, especially as a mother. "I knew he would be a great dad," she said.
