KMC to construct rain drain from M-9 to Thadu Nullah

Endeavour aims to alleviate the persistent issue faced by residents of Saadi Town and neighbouring areas

KARACHI:

City Mayor Barrister Murtaza Wahab on Tuesday has announced the initiation of a rain drain construction project by the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC), with support from the Sindh government.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, city mayor disclosed that a tender has been issued for the construction of a rain drain connecting the M-9 Motorway to Thadu Nullah. The endeavour aims to alleviate the persistent issue faced by residents of Saadi Town and neighbouring areas.

Mayor Wahab underscored the challenges encountered by residents during monsoon seasons, citing the frequent inundation caused by rainwater accumulation.

To mitigate this, extensive efforts are underway to complete the cleaning of 38 major nullahs and over 500 smaller ones across Karachi before the onset of monsoon, along with the clearance of potential choke points.

He instructed the town municipal services to expedite their operations to ensure the city's resilience during rainy days.

The mayor pointed out that numerous drains are obstructed, impeding the efficient discharge of rainwater. The encroachments, ranging from residential structures to commercial establishments, schools, mosques, and other structures, significantly diminish the drainage capacity. Consequently, overflowing rainwater disrupts traffic flow and poses hardships for citizens every monsoon season.

Mayor Wahab stressed the imperative for collaborative efforts among KMC, Karachi Water and Sewerage Board (KWSB), Sindh Solid Waste Management Board (SSWMB), and all town municipal corporations to formulate a unified strategy for effective results.
